East
Bay Company Among Initial Participants in Internet Voting Alliance
OAKLAND,
Calif. (February 28, 2000) -- An East Bay company was among the
founding participants to officially launch the Internet Voting Technology
Alliance in Washington, D.C., today.
Christine
Lavin, chief executive officer of e-Elections.com, was elected to
the founding board of directors of the IVTA, formed to examine and
review the technology to be used to vote over the Internet. The
alliance is dedicated to serving the public by acting as an information
center, discussion forum, standards setting body and Web publisher
focused on technological issues of Internet voting.
"Voting
is one of the most sacred rights we have in the United States,"
Lavin said after the meeting. "If we are ever going to vote over
the Internet, it's in everyone's interest to make sure
that the technology we use ensures privacy, is secure and remains
anonymous."
At
the founding assembly, IVTA participants unanimously agreed that
open source peer review of the protocols and encryption codes used
for Internet voting could only strengthen current systems by finding
holes and filling them. To that end, the IVTA is open for participation
from any company, organization or individual with something to contribute
to the discussion.
